Gousto Subscription Box

Disclaimer: I received this product free of charge to try out with no obligation to leave a review but decided to do one. All views are my own.

Firstly I was quite impressed with the quick delivery with it arriving only a few days after I ordered it with me also getting to choose what day I wanted it delivered. The one downside about delivery was how wide a delivery window it was. The box was estimated between 8am-7pm which isn’t really ideal for someone with a busy lifestyle which is the type of people who would mostly order this product. However, the product arrived around 12 pm so I wasn’t waiting the whole day thankfully!

Once opening the box I noticed how everything was packed carefully, kept separate with a clear instruction of where everything was to go. The meat and products that were to go in the fridge even came inside a special bag with ice packs to keep everything fresh which I was really impressed with.

I love the fact how I was allowed freedom in choosing the menus that I was interested in as well as the option to choose how many people I was feeding. All the vegetables arrived fresh as well which is a massive plus. I love how the recipe cards were hole punched in case you wanted to put them in a binder.

One thing I will say is, the timing it said on each recipe to cook was less time than it actually takes, however, I put that down to the fact I hadn’t made the recipes before. When I cook something for the first time, it takes me a lot longer than it normally would. You also don’t really know how much food you will produce when making it until the end. Both recipes were enough food for two people but if you only are cooking for one person like I was, it will fill you up if you have it with nothing else with it. Onto the recipes.

Recipe One ~ Easy Lamb Biryani:

It’s no surprise by this point that one of the recipes I picked was Indian and the other Chinese, let’s talk about the Indian first.

Just looking at the recipe card made my mouth water. The instructions were fairly easy to follow and step-by-step which is perfect for a novice cook like me. I began by peeling and dicing the onions and for once my eyes didn’t well up doing this so I guess there’s another plus.

I really loved this meal although it looked nothing like the picture and took a lot longer than 15 minutes for me to cook and prepare.

It was really tasty and filling and all the ingredients were fresh with it being an easy to follow recipe.

Recipe Two ~ Hoisin Meatballs and Chinese sesame rice:

Now, this was the recipe I learnt the most from. Firstly, I learnt how to peel ginger, who would have known that the job becomes so much easier using a spoon? To be honest I haven’t really cooked much from scratch before and when I have I’ve never used ginger.

I also learnt that it’s possible to grate the garlic. Yes, you heard me correct. This recipe requires you to grate the garlic. It was easy enough, although garlic really does stink. I love the taste of things such as garlic bread but I never till now realised how smelly it is when you are cooking with it from scratch!

This is also the recipe which has awoken my hunger for cooking meals from scratch (like what I did there?) Ever since cooking this recipe, I have been pinning recipes like mad and been researching how to make some of my already favourite foods from scratch.

You don’t have to be a food lover to fall in love with this subscription box. Such a wonderfully varied selection of recipes to choose from which are being updated every week. You also get the option of how many people you are cooking for: 2 or 4.

It would, however, be good if there was an option to cook a one person meal for those that either lives alone or don’t share similar taste buds to their family members, therefore, having to cook separate meals anyway. I suppose you could half the ingredients and kept the rest for a separate time or freeze half of the food but it’s not the same. It requires even more effort.

I’ve never been a fan of ginger previously but I didn’t taste the difference in this meal. The spiced hoisin sauce and meatballs were simply divine. However, I wasn’t so fond of the Chinese Sesame Rice. I thought that adding lettuce to rice was a bit of an odd call.

One thing that wasn’t so clear was when it came to coating the meatballs in the spiced hoisin sauce it tells you to heat a pan and then add the spiced hoisin sauce and meatballs to this to coat the meatballs in the sauce. When I tried to do this, instantly the sauce started fizzing. It could have been more clear to let you know if you should remove the pan from the heat once hot to add the meatballs and sauce or what otherwise it started hissing and essentially burning.

Other than this I loved the meatballs but perhaps if I was to make this recipe in future I would make it without the Chinese sesame rice because I really didn’t think this rice added anything special to the meal and I didn’t really like it.

All in all, this was a memorable experience, has taught me a few things about cooking as well as sparking an interest in me to cook from scratch more often in the future.

Glossybox March & April Unboxing

I meant to unbox/review March’s edition of the glossybox but never got around to doing it thanks to uni getting busy.

I therefore thought that in this blog post today I would unbox both March & April’s editions.

One thing I will say before I unveil March’s products is that they seemed to be a little covered by black dust in this box, but none of the products were damaged so I wouldn’t say it matters too much!

Sleek Makeup – Eye & Cheek Palette ~ Now, when I saw that this product was included In March’s box I was very excited to try this. I have heard of Sleek Makeup before and have been wanting to try it for a while. It looks fantastic. It also has a very simply and easy to remember name which is a plus!

Now the name of this won’t show up clearly on the picture but this is the Schwarzkopf Professional BC Bonacure Oil Miracle Brazilnut Oil Pulp Treatment (woah, what a tongue twister!) Put simply – it is a hair treatment which is claimed to make your hair shinier, smoother and more manageable if used twice a week. Looking at the sample size they provided me with, it doesn’t actually look like there is enough product there for two applications, but we will see. I will let you know how I get on!

Next up we have the Figs & Rogue – Hydra-Activ Smart Nutrient Vital Moisture Day Cream. This is supposed to quite simply moisturise & hydrate your skin.

Now this must be my favourite product out of the WHOLE month – The Oolution Eye Love. This product aims to do one of the things which I am always in dire need of – diminish dark circles and reduce puffiness. I constantly have dark circles and can never find a product that works effectively on my skin. I have high hopes for this product and can’t wait to use it.

Finally we have the This Works – in transit camera close-up ~ This product is claimed to be a mask, moisturiser and primer all in one and is apparently used by Victoria Beckham. I like the sound of a product which has multiple uses so I am eager to try this.

Onto April’s edition:

Firstly we have the Elgon Deliwash Cleansing Conditioner ~ This product aims to cleanse hair without stripping it. I really love the packaging and am eager to try this as my hair can get really tangled from time to time.

Next we have the SportFX Definition Duo Eyeliner Pencil ~ To be honest I don’t think this is a product which I am likely to try as I never have eyeliner and can’t apply it properly so I might give this a miss and see if a friend wants it. That being said, I might look up tutorials and try and use it. This remains to be decided upon.

Thirdly we have the Rodial Glamolash Mascara XXL ~ This actually looks like a pretty good product. I struggle to find a good mascara that works for me and often end up buying mascara’s and then stop using them as they aren’t effective so I am interested in looking into how effective this one is.

Next we have the MerciHandy Love and Hand Cleansing Gel ~ Who doesn’t love a good hand sanitizer? On top of that there is small bits of black glitter inside the bottle which is cute. Did I mention, it smells amazing? I can’t wait to use this!

Finally we have the ModelCo Contour Stick ~ When I first looked at this I thought it was some sort of lip crayon, but no, its a contour stick. Turns out you can even use it as eyeshadow or lip colour. While to me this personally looks too dark to contour my skin I would be interested in seeing what it looks like as a lip colour. It seems like a dark pinky/purply/browny colour so does seem a bit unusually dark for contour – but I could be wrong.

That’s everything I received in both March’s and April’s Glossybox editions. If you would like me to do a separate blog post where I actually review these products then let me know by liking or commenting on this post!

Glossybox February Review

I’ve been ordering the Glossybox subscription box since October so this month I thought it was about time that I actually reviewed one!

First things first, I absolutely love the packaging. I love how depending on the month there may be a special box design. For example, in December it was a special design for Christmas and this month there was a special design for valentine’s day.

The boxes are smartly designed in the sense that you can keep them and reuse for other things afterwards. The boxes always arrive well packaged with a delivery box around about the box containing the product. They even come with tissue paper, ribbon and confetti to wrap the products up safely inside.

I also love the fact that there is a card which tells you what each product is as sometimes it may be difficult to tell what a specific product might be.

L’Eau de Rose perfume: The first negative point was to do with the miniature perfume that came as one of the products. It did have a wonderful scent, the only thing was: the bit that sprays the perfume had fallen off which I was lucky to be able to re-attach in order to use the product! Normally all the products arrive in better condition than this. I absolutely adore the rose like scent of this perfume however it seems a lot more watery than a lot of perfumes. This is definitely one I’d consider buying when it runs out.

On the Glossybox website it shows this product next to the box it has came in but yet this product didn’t have its own box and was lying loose in the box that all the products had came in.

Noir Eternae Youth Potion Face Scrub: I was surprised at how small the sample of this product was! When you see the packaging, you think there is a lot more than there was. It felt like I was putting grit on my face as it has that classic gritty texture. Normally products with a gritty texture irritate my skin and I hate applying them but this was different.

The product didn’t make my eyes sting like these type of products normally do and my face felt fresh and cleaner once I removed the product. I would definitely consider incorporating this into my skin care regime in the future.

Paint Pot in Iced Frappe: Normally I am not a fan of such nude shades of nail varnish but found myself loving this product. When I first put it on my nails I wasn’t so sure but then it grew on me. Although, I don’t know how it has coffee undertones as stated in the information card. It is more of a beige/pale pink/nude colour, a very sophisticated shade that would be suitable for work. The shade does look a little like a manicure shade once put on nails. Very easy to apply, although it can go everywhere but if it does, its very easy to rub away the excess with a tissue while not wiping the nail varnish on the actual nail off.

Ultimate Blends Honey Treasures Strength Restorer Balm: I apologize for the poor quality image! This is one I haven’t actually tried yet. I don’t usually use hair masks but I am eager to try this one due to the fact that I regularly use Garnier products which I find really good quality products. I have used the ultimate blends shampoo and conditioner so I guess this is a similar concept only in hair mask form but in the same group of products. I am excited to use this product, I hope it can help me avoid greasy hair as my hair can get incredibly greasy all the time even just after I’ve washed it.

Beat the Blues in Oyster Gold: Another product that I haven’t tried yet. This isn’t particularly the type of product I tend to use but I am willing to give it a go. I don’t usually find much use for this type of product but I am willing to use it and then decide if I like the product.

That is everything I received in my February Glossybox! Be sure to follow me on social media to find out first when new blog posts go live!
